Effects of the Sun on Skin

July 13th, 2008 · No Comments

Everyone wants that beautiful bronze tan however, there are a few health risks that many people do not realize, or maybe they just believe the look is more important than the risks that may never occur. You know the saying, “That will never happen to me.”

When you lie in the sun and receive that awesome tan, it is the ultra-violet rays from the sun doing all the work. You cannot feel the rays at all; however, they penetrate through your skin to stimulate the cells in your body that contain the brownish pigment known as melanin. Melanin is a pigment that you put into overdrive when you tan, as its job is to protect your skin against the harmful ultra-violet rays and it scatters them all around. Individuals with dark skin such as black, brown, or even olive have more melanin pigment than individuals with lighter skin tones. The more melanin pigment the less likely you will burn.

Skin damage is not something that happens overnight. It is a long process that takes years to damage your skin, which cannot be reversed at all.

Besides the discomfort that comes with sunburn, there are various other risks involved with over exposure to the sun and its ultra-violet rays.

Cancer has been recognized as one of the leading risks involved with tanning and burning from the sun or even from tanning booths. The types of cancer you can receive from overexposure to the skin is basal, melanoma, and squamous. In most cases, these are easily treated; however, in the case of melanoma around 73% deaths occur from this type of skin cancer.

Aging of the skin is another risk that is involved with over exposure to the sun. The skin will become leathery, have more wrinkles, and the skin may brown spots or a yellowish or grayish tone.

Allergic reactions can also occur with those that are fair skinned or may be taking medicines. There are a few drugs that can cause an increase in the sensitivity to sun rays. These medicines include anti-bacterial agents such as antibiotics, which can also be found in some medicated soaps, acne treatments, tranquilizers, antidepressants, and diuretics.

Eye damage has also occurred with over exposure to the sun even in those with dark complexions. People that stay in the sun for long periods of time have more incidences of cataracts, along with corneal sunburn.

The best rule of thumb to avoid the risks of the sun is to wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of the UVA and UVB rays along with using sunblock for your skin.

Botox Side Effects

July 13th, 2008 · No Comments

As with all types of medications there are a few side effects, however, not of these side effects are so extreme that they are a deterrent.

The most common side effect noticed with Botox treatments is a light bruising around the injection area. Some individuals do not even notice any type of bruising while those with light skin or that are prone to bruising will notice a light bruising. The bruising is very easy to cover up with a small amount of makeup and will fade quickly.

Remember, Botox is an injection administered to the muscles of your face causing the muscles to relax. Due to this fact, some individuals do experience such things as eyelid drooping or even limited range of motion in other muscles groups of the face. This occurs when the Botox spreads to other muscles of the face. The good news is that this only occurs in rare cases on average about 1%.

A few of the other minor short-term side effects that have been noted include redness at the injection site, facial pain, and weakness of the facial muscles. All of these side effects are gone within one week.

If you are taking any other medication, you will need to talk with your physician and even your pharmacist. Some medications may cause other side effects if you receive Botox. Some medications that might result with other side effects after an interaction with Botox include antibiotics, medicine to treat Alzheimer’s disease, and medications to treat heart rhythm complications.

Over the counter medications should also be discussed with your doctor and you should not take aspirin or ibuprofen at least two weeks prior to your treatment. However, any medications even over the counter if taken on a regular basis should be mentioned to your physician.

If you want to ensure that, you will not have as much bruising you can quit using some of your normal over the counter medications and herbs such as any type of anti-inflammatory, multivitamins, Vitamin E, and St. John’s Wort.

Botox will remain in the body for not over six months. Some individuals have experienced a few side effects for the entire time while other have only noticed side effects for one week. In most cases, the side effects are mild and usually go away within seven days.

Taking Protective Measures Against Sun

July 13th, 2008 · No Comments

The sun can and does damage our skin even though we do not notice the damage many times until we are older as it takes years for the damage caused by the ultra-violet rays to appear. It is in the best interest of all people to protect their skin while they are enjoying those sunny days. Even in cloudy weather, you will be receiving ultra-violet rays and need to protect your skin.

Protective measure against the sun includes:

  • If at all possible, do not be out in the sun between 10am and 4pm. This is when the sun’s rays are the strongest even through the clouds.
  • Try to stay in the shade if and when you can
  • Always wear a hat to protect your face, neck, and ears. Not just a ball cap that only protects the top of your head.
  • Wear long sleeves and long pants
  • Use sunscreen. The best sunscreen is at least a 15 SPF. This should be worn each day and if you are working out in the sun, you will need to reapply after sweating. Remember to reapply after swimming.
  • If you wear t-shirts, the American Cancer Society states that is not enough to protect you against the rays, you should wear sunscreen under your t-shirt as well.
  • If you enjoy water sports, playing in the sand, or even skiing you should wear sunscreen as all of these reflect the sun and can result in damage to your skin.
  • Do no think that you can use tanning beds or booths without sunscreen. The same ultraviolet rays are used to tan as well.
  • Watch your skin for anything out of the normal such as moles, blemishes, and birthmarks that have changed in shape, size, or color. This could be the beginnings of skin cancer.
  • If you have to be out in the sun, purchase clothing with SPF ratings.
  • Remember children under the age of 6 months should not use any type of sunscreen. It is best to keep them covered from head to toe if they have to be outside.

The rules of enjoying sunny days include:

  • Stay in the shade from 11am until 4pm
  • Never burn
  • Keep covered up while in the sun
  • Watch your children closely to ensure they do not burn or are not protected
  • Use sunscreen 15SPF

Many women are trying this product and are completely amazed at just how well this product actually rids their face of fine lines and wrinkles at about half the cost of many of the other products found on today’s market.

Avon states, “The treatment that does what no collagen injection can. Worldwide, the #1 treatment of choice was the collagen injection. However, collagen injections do not build or promote collagen, elastin, and hydro-protein renewal. Derma-3X Technology™ found in Anew Clinical Line and Wrinkle Corrector does. It targets these three elements of the skin’s foundation to renew, rebuild, and regenerate skin from within. No doctor. No prescription. No needle required.”

The insert accompanying the Avon Anew Clinical Line & Wrinkle Corrector gives all the information regarding the four patents that are now pending. This awesome anti-aging system plumps up and fills in deep lines and wrinkles that are found around the nose, mouth, eyes, which provides “visible results within days.”

Applying Anew Clinical Line & Wrinkle Corrector before going to bed you will notice when you awake that smooth fine lines and wrinkles have diminished, after only three days the hollowed lines and wrinkles are plumped up, after one week the majority of uses noticed their skin had more elasticity, and with continued use, deep lines are reduced.

This products works to rebuild elastin, makes skin more elastic and resilient, recreates collagen, makes skin firmer, makes skin stronger, makes skin smoother, and regenerates hydro-protein.

Avon Anew Clinical Line & Wrinkle Corrector is very easy to use as all you do is gently massage over your face and neck before going to bed. Remember to target areas with the most fine lines and wrinkles. “Avon Anew Clinical is hypo-allergenic, 99.9% oil free, dermatologist tested, and non-comedogenic.”

Ingredients of Avon Anew Clinical Line & Wrinkle Corrector include, “Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Ammonium Glycolate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone crosspolymer, Trioxaundecanedioic Acid, Ammonium Trioxaundecanedioate, Bis-PEG/PPG-14/14 Dimethicone, Cetearyl Methocone, Punica Granatum Fruit Juice, Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) Fruit Extract, Medicago Staiva (Alfalfa) Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Jice, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Mannitol, Glycogen, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Root Extract, Picha Peptone Filtrate, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Oleea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Pyrus Mallus (Apple) Root Extract, Yeast Extract, Tilia Cordata Wood Extract, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Cetyl PEG/PPG 10/1 Dimethocone, Silica, Paraffin, Butylene Glycol PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Talc, Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Sodium Chloride, Ammonium Hydroxide, Methicone, Fragrance, Chlorphenesin, Benzyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, and Iron Oxides.”

Bubble Bath for Body & Soul

May 15th, 2008 · No Comments

A bubble bath is more than just a way to clean your body. You can create a bubble bath that will relax you, rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul, and of course clean your body. Today, stress is the leading cause of many ailments and with just a bubble bath with all the correct items, you can have stress and tension melts away.

The way to start is by ensuring you can have at least 30 minutes to yourself alone in a bubble bath. If you have to wait until every other family member is in bed asleep then do so, as you will be able to reap the rewards in a soothing and relaxing bubble bath. If you get time to take this luxurious bubble bath in the middle of the day during naptime, remember to unplug the phone!

You will need bubble bath (preferably an aromatherapy all natural one), candles or incense, quiet relaxing music, a plush comfortable towel, your favorite soft robe and slippers.

Choosing the bubble bath
Find a scent that you really love. Be sure to find a bubble bath that will also moisturize your skin. Lavender is the most popular due to the relaxation benefits found in the flower; however, some people prefer chamomile, sandalwood, or vanilla.

Candles & Incense
Candles and incense both have wonderful relaxation properties. Matching the color and fragrance to set the mood will aid in melting away tensions. Colors that help in calming include pale greens, blues, violets, and white. You may want to use candles or incenses that offer the same aroma as the bubble bath or find one that creates a soft aroma that will blend well with the bath.

Of course, you want music that is soft and quiet or you can also find tapes or CD’s that offer such things as a rambling brook, a waterfall, or a gentle rain. Just remember, you want to relax, do not choose rock n’ rock music.

Choosing the Towel

A large fluffy towel that can be wrapped entire around your body is the best to make you feel relaxed and comfortable. Again, use cool pale colors to keep the mood calm and relaxing.

Choosing your Robe & Slippers
A comfy and fluffy robe and soft plush slippers that will wrap you in comfort is of course relaxing and even makes you feel protected. You may wish a cool cotton or satin robe instead; really, it depends on what makes you feel relaxed.
